Means to an End

Submitted by Sarah VanKrimpen on Sun, 05/15/2005 - 10:04.

This is not a means to an end. I used to have the mindset of "finish this just to say you did it." I didn't want to be the only person at my Christian communications company who had not read through the entire Bible! *Gasp*

My mindset has changed a lot since I started. It boils down to that old Christian argument: can you get to God through good works? The answer is no. (For those of you who have not read the entire Bible, and otherwise would know.) :-) All kidding aside, I am not going to better myself because I read the Bible in 90 days. I am going to read the Bible in 90 days because I already have the spirit within me to read God's word. You can argue about the validity of reading the Bible in 90 days - the 12 pages breaks the reading up too much or you don't delve into the text enough. Valid arguments. However...

Day 30

We're a third of the way through! Can I get a witness? Amen!
My post today will be short, because I mostly have a question. First, I want to post a disclaimer: I believe that the Bible is the word of God. I believe that all books, all chapters, all verses are included for a reason.

Now here's my question: What in the world is the purpose of Chronicles and why am I reading it?

Thanks,
Sarah

Day 24

I had an interesting "coincidence" with today's reading. This morning I was driving into work (all the way from Holland!) and listening to the radio. The DJs were talking about a Ladies' Night event they were hosting and then asked the call-in question, "What's the best thing about being a woman?" I have to admit, I only thought about it for a second, but then decided that I didn't have a really good answer. I'm sure there are good things about being a woman, I just couldn't call a "best" example to mind. :)

Now here's the interesting connection. Last night after I read the 12 pages for today, I had a really interesting conversation with my boyfriend about Solomon. I was very confused in the second chapter of Kings (1 Ki 2:22) when Solomon blew his top at his mother's request for Adonijah. Why was Solomon so ticked that his step-brother wanted to marry a particular woman? Kent reminded me, though, of who that woman was. I must have read too quickly or gotten lost in all the names, because I forgot that the woman Adonijah requested had been a part of King David's royal harem.

Day 20

Today's reading made me realize once again that I am a child. I am not patient, I throw hissy fits, I disobey my parents, and I eat all kinds of junk food that I should not eat. Therefore I related very well to the readings this week.

Case in point: Chapter 8 - Israel asks for a King. Samuel spells it out: here are all the terrible things that will happen to you if you have a King. Amazingly enough, the Israelites don't care. As a matter of fact, they pull the old middle school excuse: "All the other kids are doing it." Now, I was not a rebellious kid, but there were several times when people have said: "Don't do it. Here are all the terrible things that will happen if you do." And what do I do? I do it. And in all truth, half the time I probably came out unscathed and half the time I probably came out with a few scars.

Greetings, fellow BIND readers!

I've had a really great experience thus far. I will just mention that I thought this would be a chore. I signed up because I just wanted to say that I had done it. However, this has turned into much more. I don't want to spend a lot of time on my experience overall, but I would like to jump into the reading for today.

Day 16 ~ Dt 33:24 - Jos 13:22
I know that Moses is much more well-known than Joshua. But in my opinion, while reading the beginning of Joshua's story, I was enthralled. Nothing was what one would expect. In the perfect storybook plot, Moses should live to enter the Promised Land. He should die there and be buried there before Joshua takes over. There’s your “happily ever after.” But as Shrek 2 teaches us, most things do not follow storybook endings.

God's Laundry List

Submitted by Sarah VanKrimpen on Sun, 04/03/2005 - 13:36.

Whew! I hit my first day of difficult reading yesterday. God starts his laundry list of dos and do nots. However, I thought it would be much worse. At the end, I wondered how in the world I would have reacted to hearing those words and whether or not I would abide by them.

Then I got a little jealous. I think many of us have, at some point in time, wished that God would be that specific in our lives. I've asked God "What college should I go to?" Silence. "Is this the right job opportunity?" Silence. "Is this home a good investment?" Silence. Now, God did eventually answer my prayers, but in
