"A means to an end? Reading the Bible cover to cover is not a means to an end. I used to have the mindset of 'finish this just to say you did it, this will be a great achievement.' And I didn't want to be the only person in my study group who did not read through the entire Bible during this challenge! *Gasp!*

My mindset has changed a lot since I started this program and really began reading the Bible. I am not going to better myself because I read the Bible in 90 days. I am going to read the Bible in 90 days because I already have the spirit within me to read God's Word. You can argue about the validity of reading the Bible in 90 days, that the 12 pages break the reading up too much, or the idea that you don't delve into the text enough—both are valid arguments, however...

The fact remains; every day, I am spending at least half an hour in God's Word. It's like holding a baby for 30 minutes a day versus never allowing it to feel human touch or spending 30 minutes talking to your teenage son about the latest sports report versus never speaking about anything. It is taking 30 minutes to eat a meal versus starving yourself all day. It may not seem like much, but it does make all the difference."

"Our God is truly an Awesome God! Reading the Bible in this way provided a great chance to see some of the overarching themes in Scripture. The pace of reading forced us to not get caught up in the details but look for the big picture. Some of the things I learned while reading the Bible in 90 days are:

  • God is in control! He is faithful and uses ordinary people like you and me to further his work here on Earth. He is concerned about the details of our daily lives.
  • A big thing for me while reading the Old Testament was how seeing the past through God’s eyes helped me see the present through his eyes. An example of this was a weekend of little trials that I had. On Saturday morning I found out my Dad was having kidney problems. On Saturday night I got a flat tire. Then on Sunday morning my computer died. At first I felt like, “why God?” Then my thoughts quickly turned to how God cared for me during these little trials. The day I got the flat tire I had been driving all over town by myself without my cell phone. When I got the flat tire I was with my sister-in-law and had my cell phone. My computer died on Sunday of that weekend. On Friday night I had finished my taxes, submitted them to the feds, and was up to date on all my financials. Plus once I got my refund I would have enough to buy a new computer! Being reminded of how God was caring for me in the small details provided me comfort that God was also caring for my Dad through his illness.
  • While reading the New Testament I fell more and more in love with Jesus, and I also fell in love with reading the Bible. I’ve always found Bible reading to be a chore but for the first time I found a joy and delight in reading the Bible. I finished reading the Bible on a Sunday right before church. During the church service I had this profound sense of how much God loves me. It’s something I’ve always known and sung about since a child in Sunday school. But this was deeper than ever before. You’ve probably heard the song, “Lord, you are more precious than silver.” The church I was attending sang the song in a way I’ve never heard before. The words started: “We say: Lord, you are more precious than silver. Lord, you are more costly than gold. Lord, you are more beautiful than diamonds, and nothing I desire compares with you. God says: Child, you are more precious than silver. Child, you are more costly than gold. Child, you are more beautiful than diamonds, and nothing I desire compares with you.” While singing the song I realized this was God speaking to me, clearly saying, thank you for showing me how much you love me by reading my Word.

I hope you’re encouraged by my story. Our God is an awesome God. He loves each one of you very much."

"My Christian friends think I am crazy to read the Bible in 90 days. Now think about this. This is from people that already know my quirky ways and choose to hang out with me. My friends love to read the Bible and books; and that’s about all they talk about. They called me NUTS! I thought it was nuts also, but hey, that never stopped me from doing anything before. I find myself thinking about God’s Word all day—waking up early, and hungry to get back to my reading. Watch TV—Why?—I want to see what happens next in the Word. Reading the Bible is fun. Am I on target with my reading? Mostly, but who cares? Some days I’m more than a day ahead, some days I’m a day behind. It doesn’t matter. I’m enjoying the 90 Day Challenge."

"After much too long a break from daily Bible reading (long, but truly legitimate story), I have circled Easter Sunday as the day I will again return to my daily Scripture reading ritual. I've used many different reading plans over the past 12 years of Christian faith, including the one-year Bible, various checkbox systems, specific book studies and the old "open 'er up and read" plan.

I'm excited about the 90 Day Challenge I'm undertaking, not only to reinforce my daily reading habit, but also to get a good overview of the whole Scripture story. I don't think that I have a great grasp of how all of Scripture points to Christ and I'm looking forward to using the Bible in 90 Days curriculum to know more about the Savior I seek to serve.

At first I thought reading the Bible cover to cover was a bit overwhelming. I'm using The Bible in 90 Days, Zondervan's specially designed NIV Larger-Print Thinline Bible, which breaks down the readings to 12 pages a day. At 8,000 words a day, that's the same as:

  • 3 1/2 pages in the Wall Street Journal
  • 4 pages in USA Today
  • 10 pages in my local newspaper
  • 28 pages (one week's worth of readings) in the ever-popular book, "The Purpose Driven Life"
  • 60 pages in People magazine (about 1/4 of the total magazine)

I realize that I read a lot without even thinking of it. It’s a great time for me to be more intentional about what I read and making God's love letter to me the first thing I let my mind meditate on each day.

Intrigued? Take the 90 Day Challenge--you’ll see what I’m talking about!"
